Our destination was the Great Barrier Reef. Professor Aronnax and I had been to the Barrier Reef once before. We were studying the behavioral patterns of marine invertebrates for the professor's book. Of course, we did not have the luxury of studying the reef up close. We were confined to the portions of the reef that lay only ten miles from the Australian coastline, and we were only able to study specimens that we could see through the surface or catch with a feeble fishing line.
